Introducing the Reading Trainer App
Since I was a kid, I have not been fond of reading books or doing any leisure reading because I find it boring. I would rather enjoy active activities such as sports or outdoor recreational activities.
I realized recently that I had trouble with my reading speed and retention rate. It was probably because I did not develop many reading techniques before, so I struggled reading long articles or books. Thus, I decided to improve my reading speed and retention.
There is a tool that helped me improve myself, which is the Reading Trainer app. It was primarily made to help users have fun and challenging exercises to improve their reading skills, including their reading speed and retention rate.
It promises that it can lead to a significant increase in my reading speed, improve my mental capacity, and hone my comprehension and retention. The Reading Trainer app provides the necessary materials and exercises to improve my reading skills.
Installing the Reading Trainer App
There are things we can do on our own, like looking for ways to improve our skills with the help of online tools. One of my chosen tools to develop a specific skill is the Reading Trainer app, which provides all the relevant exercises for my reading speed, comprehension, and retention.
HeKu IT GmbH launched the Reading Trainer app in September 2012. The developer made the Reading Trainer app available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store for free. But, there are in-app purchase items available on Reading Trainer.
The Reading Trainer app works best on devices running on AndroidOS 4.4 and up devices and iOS 11.0 or later.
Getting Started With the Reading Trainer App
Upon installing the Reading Trainer app, it welcomed me, claiming that it is an IT solution for people’s reading skills. It explained that it contains challenging and fun exercises to improve my reading speed.
Then, the Reading Trainer app asked me to create an account. It supports linking my Facebook or Google account or registering any email address. The app asks me to access my name, profile picture, and email address associated with my chosen account to register.
Since the app will ask for some personal information, it is best to understand how the Reading Trainer app will protect my data privacy.
Subscribing to the Reading Trainer Premium
The Reading Trainer app uses the freemium model, in which I can enjoy most of its features without paying anything. However, exclusive features and content can only be unlocked if I subscribe to its premium plan.
Some exclusive features are unlimited units, 15 exclusive interactive exercises, and cloud synchronization of my progress.
The Reading Trainer app costs $2.99 per month. However, additional in-app purchase items range from $0.99 to $66 per product.
Setting My Goals on the Reading Trainer App
In addition, the Reading Trainer app asked me what my goal was in using the app. There are three options provided, which are reading more content within the same time (1), reducing the amount of time spent reading (2), and improving comprehension and retention (3).
Then, the app needs its users to identify their age based on the age groups it provided: under 18, 18-24, 25-34, 45-54, 55-64, and 65 or older. Next, the Reading Trainer app wanted to know the type of content I would like to read faster.
The options for these question depends on the age of the users. For example, in my case, the Reading Trainer app listed the following options: work-related content, emails, websites, professional journals, documentation, messages, social media posts, movie subtitles, song lyrics, manuals, etc.
Moreover, the Reading Trainer app wanted me to identify my speed reading experience, whether a newcomer (This is my first experience), basic knowledge (I already have some experience), or advanced (I have attended seminars or trained with an app or software, etc.).
Determining My Current Reading Speed
Once I have set my goals, the Reading Trainer app will create a personalized curriculum depending on my targets. Another piece of information that needs to be considered is my current reading speed.
Thus, the Reading Trainer app asked me to test myself to determine my current reading speed.
A text will be displayed on the screen, and I have to press the “Finished” button once I am done. Then, I have to answer the questions covering text comprehension.
Checking My Personalized Curriculum on the App
Upon completing the reading speed test and comprehension assessment, the Reading Trainer app completes my personalized curriculum. This curriculum is based on my reading goals and current reading speed, comprehension, and retention.
The curriculum has several exercises that target my needs to improve my present skill level.
I could find the curriculum on the Training tab. In my experience, the Reading Trainer app recommends eight specific exercises for me to work with to hone my reading skills.
Enjoying the Reading Exercises on the Reading Trainer App
The Reading Trainer app claims that it does provide not only challenging activities but also fun exercises. It is true because all the exercises available are in the form of games. The challenge is that I have to ace every exercise to get a great mark and record.
Aside from the difficulty of the exercises, the time limit also works wonders on my adrenaline. These exercises forced me to read swiftly, understand better, and retain more information. The Reading Trainer app provides fun while improving my skills.
Some of the exercises provided by the Reading Trainer app are word pairs, letter jumble, numbers, word search, Schulte number, text search, number search, even numbers, Schulte letters, letter mixup, Schulte mix, words, sentences, WpM-Test, and comprehension exercises.
Monitoring My Progress on the Reading Trainer App
The Reading Trainer app wants me to stay on top of my progress in honing my reading skills. Thus, it provided the Statistics tab, wherein I can regularly check my progress in different aspects of reading skills that I want to improve.
The Reading Trainer app lets me know my current rank as a reader, whether I am a reading beginner, a reading pro, etc. The rank depends on my statistical data or record of different aspects of reading skills.
I can improve each aspect by continuously playing or doing the different aspects. To do so, I need to finish or follow closely the personalized curriculum made by the Reading Trainer app for me.
The app also includes my current unit number in the curriculum, so I would know where I would continue to proceed.
Other Statistics to Monitor
It is important to monitor my average words per minute on the Reading Trainer app. It is the overall speed indicator for my reading. I started reading slowly but eventually improved by continuously doing the exercises.
There is also the record of my average retention, indicating my comprehension level. The retention rate is in percentage form, so I will know how well I answered the related questions after each reading exercise.
In addition, the Reading Trainer app displays my best and worst exercises. Since each exercise is focused on specific reading skills, I will easily know which particular aspect of reading I need more exercises to improve.
Understanding Reading-Related Skills to Improve
The Reading Trainer app made it clear that reading is not only focused on how fast I finish or how much information I remember after reading a text. Many factors affect my reading speed and retention rate.
The Reading Trainer app’s mission is to let me master the skills I need to attain effective reading techniques. First, I need to work on my eye movements to make them more flexible.
I should also rapidly recognize numbers, letters, words, and sentences. I also need to improve my ability to concentrate and focus on a specific text for better comprehension. Lastly, the app will help me to have an increased vision span.
The Reading Trainer app assures users that the exercises are designed to target each reading-related skill. Thus, I only have to accomplish the exercises to improve those skills continuously.
Discovering Who Needs the Reading Trainer App
It is not easy to admit that we need help with our reading skills. However, the Reading Trainer app recommends that people who often feel like they are taking too long to read something or returning to the previous passages because something was not clear try the app.
In addition, the Reading Trainer app mentioned that these individuals must use the app: anyone reading more than half an hour a day, executives, secretaries, high school and college students, and purchasing and sales professionals.
